Last February 23, 2019, Staturday 8:00AM-12:00NN at the Pakighinabi Room, 3F, Communiity Center, Ateneo de Davao University, Roxas, Davao City the 2019 General Assembly was attended by 37 coaches coming from Grade School, Junior High School, Senior High School, and College units of Ateneo de Davao.
Two great coaches were invited to speak and impart their valuable wisdom to AdDU Coaches, namely, Tony Benson and Ronel Leuterio. Tony Benson is an Australian former long-distance runner, world’s 8th fastest ever time for 3000m, and recorded a world best time of 27:37 for a road of 10 kilometers. He was employed as the National Coach of the Philippines (1979-1983) and now currently involved with Run Out of Poverty providing free coaching to students mostly in the Ma-a District of Davao City. On the other hand, Ronel Leuterio is a multi-titled basketball coach and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Davao Executive Program Director. He’s been a part of numerous coaching teams like of the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta in Las Pinas, College of St. Benilde, and Davao Eagles for the Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) back in 2000. He enriched our coaches from his experiences and from some of the connections he made upon moving to Chicago which expanded his basketball coaching vocabulary. Coaches Benson and Leuterio elevated and opened new perspectives for the AdDU coaches through their respective talks.
On the later part, the coaches were divided into groups to have focus group discussions (FGD) with one assigned facilitator to each group to enrich their learning experience as a coach and as a part of the University Athletics Office (UAO). Such activity aims to deepen the learning progress of coaches to effectively mold student-athletes to become better individuals, while reminding them the importance and advantages of having FGD or any methods of processing in everything that they do with their respective teams and also as individuals.
