The Ateneo Volleyball Summer League (AVSL) Season 2, which was held last May 5-27, 2018 at 7F Martin Hall, Ateneo de Davao University, Jacinto, Davao City, is an annual volleyball event spearheaded by the Ateneo Volleyball Program under the University Athletics Office. It’s an open league which is being participated by university, college, or school-based, government agencies, private entities, and club teams all over Davao City and its nearby cities like Tagum, Gensan, and Mati. All games were played on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays from 8:0AM-7:00PM.

Its main goal is to create an active volleyball community in Davao City that celebrates the growing culture of volleyball and to also go beyond it through partnering with various communities. This season had a community outreach event, partnered with the local government’s City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO), involving 12 young boys and 8 girls, aging 15 and below. The whole-day outreach event was held on May 19, 2018 where the participants had a mini-volleyball league in the morning and a shared movie experience in the afternoon, wherein they watched the movie “Sing” and consequently had short conversations about the importance of having dreams and being true to themselves while reaching for it.

There were 21 competing teams for the Men’s division while 16 teams for the Women’s division. The top four teams, of each division, for this season are the following: Women’s division, Ateneo de Davao University-College 3rd Runner Up, Philippine National Police 2nd Runner Up, Ace Volleyball Club 1st Runner Up, DAF ARMM Optima Champions; Men’s Division, Jr. Iron Tagum 3rd Runner Up, University of Mindanao Tagum 2nd Runner Up, University of Mindanao Davao 1st Runner Up, and DAF ARMM Optima Champions. The top performing athletes, for each division were also awarded to the following: Best Liberos- Keaneath Cutamora and Trixie Laroga, Best Setters- Allen Sales and Maricel Cabus, Best Servers- Eddiemar Kasim and Carol Concon, Best Blockers- Keith Sampinit and Floricol Magsigay, Best Attackers- Rex Paller and Thania Boltiador, Best Scorers- Jan Ashley Jacob and Hannieca Trinidad, Most Valuable Players- Edmar Flores and Venus Flores.

The official partners of this year’s AVSL are Monde Nissin and Balibolista de Dabaw (Volleyball Officiating Organization). AVSL Season 2 have grown in numbers since its first season, conducted last 2017, and is continually growing under the supervision and collaborative effort of AdDU Athletics’ Volleyball Program, where student-athletes go beyond sports through organizing events. The core principle of AVSL is not only to provide an annual volleyball tournament but it’s a partnership of student-athletes, school administration, and external communities to bring out the best in Davao’s volleyball community in and out of the court.
