Perlas Pilipinas clinch 3rd Women’s Basketball Invitational title

Victory on home soil.

The Discovery Perlas Pilipinas National Women’s Basketball team clinched the 3rd Discovery Women’s Basketball Invitational title after beating the Papua New Guinea Valivas-A team in the decisive championship game last Sunday, February 22, at the Davao City Recreational Center.

The four-day event, which started on February 19, featured four teams from three countries: Papua New Guinea’s Valivas-A (PNG-A) and Valivas-B (PNG-B) teams, coached by Thalo Green, the Turkmenistan Women’s Basketball team led by Irina Yakovleva, and the Haydee Ong-mentored Perlas Pilipinas.

On the first day, PNG-A narrowly defeated Team Turkmenistan 62-60. The second game was not as close, however, as Perlas Pilipinas overran Papua New Guinea Valivas-B to a tune of 83-29.

The second day of the invitational saw Turkmenistan knock off PNG-B with a resounding 53-point victory, coming out on top of a 78-25 tilt. On the second game, Perlas Pilipinas had another excellent showing, overpowering PNG-A 87-57.

The games continued on the third day of the event with PNG-A and Perlas Pilipinas delivering the ousting blows to PNG-B and Turkmenistan respectively. On the first game, PNG-A defeated PNG-B with Jarabako and Elavo bannering the winning team by contributing 13 points each. Both stars drained three after three to push PNG-A over their national counterparts en route to a commanding 75-55 victory.

In the second game, Perlas Philippines utilized balanced offense and tight to dominate Turkemenistan 67-41. Siat, Jacob, and Flormata led the attack for the nationals, providing constant offense to keep Team Philippines on top.

On the final day of the tournament, Turkmenistan clinched third place of the tournament via a 48-point rout, winning 72-34 over the winless PNG-B. The second game featured Perlas Pilipinas battling against PNG-A for the championship. Team Philippines led from start to finish, and finished off the Papua New Guinea Valivas-A team with a convincing 78-58 win to bag the 3rd Discovery Women’s Basketball Invitational title.

 

The event was presented by the Discovery Leisures Company (Discovery Suites, Discovery Shores Boracay, Country Suites-Discovery Tagaytay, Club Paradise-Palawan) and was organized by the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU-Athletics Department) in partnership with the City Government of Davao through the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor’s Office (SDD-CMO) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). The event was sponsored by the City Tourism operations office-Davao, The Royal Mandaya Hotel, Sterling Bank of Asia, Chevrolet-Davao, Chowking, Gatorade, MIS Maritime Corporation, Havaianas, GrabTaxi, Summit, Gerry’s Grill, SBP Davao, and Uratex.
